☆ The Third Very Special Commission [Friday Art]

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I hope that you have enjoyed your holidays + that santa was as generous at your house as it was at ours.

I thought that I would share with you the last of my very specials commissions. (You can see no. 1 here + no. 2 here)

Seeing the girls faces when they opened their painting was so cool. I loved seeing their expressions + amazement.

Nothing Better.

And worth every moment spent in the studio creating them!

Seeing the girls open these was my very favourite Christmas memory…

So I hope you enjoy the rest of your holidays. I am going to spend the next week with family, so I will see you in the new year!

☆ What do Mermaids have as pets? [Friday Art]

What do Mermaids keep as their pets?

I asked Miss Bean this question this week - she told me that mermaids had pet fish like Flounder from the Little Mermaid, but then Miss Bug piped up and told me with total certainty that they had sea horses as their pets.

And this is the inspiration for this weeks Friday Art.

I love the idea that mermaids could have a menagerie of pets in cages in their mermaid grottos.

THE MERMAID'S PET

I has me thinking... what would you keep in your mermaid grotto? I would love to know!

☆ AEDM + Works in Progress

I think I jinxed myself slightly on Monday by asking how you guys managed when the tank runs dry...

Tuesday lunch time [which for me is prime studio time] saw me curled up on the couch, becoming crankier by the minute at myself for not hoisting my large pregnant self off the comfy couch and moving to my [not so comfy] studio chair.

So instead of being a real bitch to myself, I had a sleep.

And it must have been just what I needed because that night I started the Mermaid on a Swing Painting that I shared on face book.

I finished her yesterday...

Mermaid on a Swing
Yesterday morning Bean woke up and said to me 'Mama, how do you grow a rainbow?'

I replied that I didn't know but asked her how she thought you grew a rainbow...

And she said to me

'First you find the end of the Rainbow and you grab some of it, then you put it in the ground, and cover it with dirt, and water it, a lot, and then you grow a rainbow.'

It made perfect sense.

So here the Rainbow painting I started yesterday...
Growing a Rainbow
How is your AEDM journey going? Where are you finding your inspiration at the moment? I would love to hear your stories.

By the way have you had a chance to enter this months give away, (which closes Tuesday), or perhaps join me in a Christmas Tag Swap

Thanks for popping in.

☆ Water [Illustration Friday]

This weeks Illustration Friday prompt was fun.

I mean what is more water like than a mermaid?

Nothing I could think of...

Well maybe I could think of a few things, but nothing that inspired me so much.

Anyway, it has been a while since I have painted a mermaid, but she has inspired me to do a few more I think.

She will be available for sale tomorrow.

Also there is one more week left to enter Octobers 'spooky' give away - click here for FREE entry.

Have a great week.

☆ No One Ever Told Me....[no. 36]

aka 'Teacher' [an illustration friday prompt]
The Mermies Child
CURRENTLY FOR SALE HERE

When I first bought Bean home from the hospital, there were many things that I thought my role as a mama would be.

I knew that I would be a mama, a healer, a hugger, a cheerleader, a consoler, a protector.... the list is endless really.

But what no one ever told me was that in essence I was to be the most important teacher that my girls would ever have.

That life was going to be our class rooms, and the lessons would be every minute of every day.

I, my husband, my extended family are all teachers of our children.

We teach them many of life's lessons, right from wrong, to be kind and patient. To be the best they can be - always.

And I know it is a cliche, but no one ever told me that it takes a tribe to raise a child.

And most days I am thankful for the tribe that surround my girls, 'cause sometimes the responsibility of raising my precious beasties is over whelming. [and sometimes they are just....well they are just feral beasties and then I am doubly thankful for the support!]

What was the greatest lesson that you were taught by your teachers? Be they conventional school teachers, mentors, or other inspiring people in your life.

☆ Where do Mermaids Stand? [inspiration avenue]

Mermaid Peek-A-Boo
AVAILABLE FOR SALE HERE
 8.3 x 5.8" (210 x 148 mm)

Every Wednesday Bean, Bug and I venture out and go to our local play group.

It's a great group, friendly people, with a wide variety of backgrounds, so it is always interesting, if not sometimes controversial. I am never bored.

One Wednesday, they were telling the kids the story of  Noah's Arc, and how everything and everyone except the people and animals on this arc were flooded.

All the kids were nodding, were totally involved, and then my Bean pipes up.

My beautiful, imaginative Bean says, "Except for the mermaids 'R'. The mermaids would have been ok, because they live in the water don't they."

R replies after looking startled, well of course Bean, the mermaids would have been just fine.

So where do mermaids stand? Right at the front of the queue according to my Beasties! Check out Inspiration Avenue this week for some amazing mermaids.

Have a great week

☆ Work in Progress

I thought I would share some photos of a series of paintings that I have started this week.

I found some old frames, that I had once put some beautiful postcards into, but sadly they had faded over time, so I thought it would be nice to paint a few mermaids for Bean and Bugs play room.

I'm really excited by these paintings, these mermaids are vibrant and each has their own personality.

At one stage I thought that I might attempt to write a novel and I remember reading a lot about how some authors didn't have control over their characters, that they tended to take over demanding their own story.

At the moment I haven't any burning desire to write, the characters that were once swirling in my head seem to be appearing before me under my pencil. They are demanding their own story told.

Have a great weekend

☆ Mystical Magical Makings - Mermaids

I can't believe how long it's been between posts. I have been totally wrapped up in my art, every lunch time when the girls sleep, evenings once they've gone to bed. And I have been totally loving it, I have been really excited every step of the way, I think she is the best of me, and she has taught me a lot.

Bean calls her 'Mama's pretty mermaid painting, her pretty blue arial' (spoken of course with that adorable toddler voice!)

This week we were focusing on change, growth and transformation and incorporating element used by the artist Chagall. Unlike the angel and goddess weeks however, I decided not to embrace the movement associated with this week, I had intended to, but in the end I thought she was meant to be just the way she is...

...So here she is. my pretty blue mermaid.

Not a great photo I know, but I will update this when I can get her into natural light tomorrow.
The butterfly - a classic symbol of transformation
