☆ Taking Risks + setting the Humming Birds Free [Life Lessons]

It never fails to amaze me that at this stage of my life, the late 30's that I would still have so many life lessons to learn.

My 15 year old, know-it-all self, would have scoffed at this, because we all know at 15 you have the world totally sussed out...

So this 'Life Lesson' was featured in my LilliBean Designs: Snippets from the Studio, but I felt that it was an important lesson that I needed to be reminded of + thought I'd share it here too.

The one where I set the humming birds free...

When was the last time you took a risk? And I don't mean, jaywalking against the traffic lights, or leaving your washing out when rain threatens.
I mean when was the last time you took a risk, a risk that meant a great deal to you, a risk that put your heart on the line, that made the humming birds in your belly go crazy. That kind of risk.

Last week, I took a risk + held my second market stall. This was a big leap for me, it wasn't at my local farmers markets, where I had my first stall, (and is what I consider'safe' ), it was at a big event, where hundreds of people would be attending, the next town over.

It was an even bigger risk for me because, not only was I opening myself up to judgment + investing a lot emotionally (which is hard to do at the best of times), but I was also investing a bit financially.
I was moving into the bigger leagues.

And surprisingly, I didn't freak out too much about it, I just moved through the list of stuff I had to do. I was calm (mostly) + then, well....

So an hour before I was due to go, it all seem to go wrong. Mac had an emergency call out, Bean had a major meltdown, Beastie was sick, the site had no electricity, so I needed a solution to that + then Mac's truck had an warning light come on (and we all know nuthin' good can ever come from ignoring one of those!!)

So on the car ride over, instead of blasting my favourite tunes + singing at the top of my lungs, I gave myself a good talking to.

Something along the lines of:

"So Kirst, this isn't a big deal, ok, well it is a big freaking deal, and yes you are risking your heart, and you are putting yourself out there in a huge way, which you hate, but you are doing it, because it's the right path to take, so get out of yourself + it is going to be ok. And if not, it is only 8 hours, and Bean's labour was that long + you survived that, so this is a piece of cake, this is going to be ok"

It is going to be ok.

It wasn't ok.

It was freaking awesome.

It was awesome meeting truly fabulous people, who enjoyed my paintings. I was awesome speaking to amazing kids about how they dream of being an artist. I was awesome speaking to others about their incredible artistic journeys. I was amazing hanging with Mac, my girls + my friends on a magical evening.
It was freaking awesome.

So the point of this is to encourage you to take a risk. Something that sends those humming birds crazy, open yourself up + put it out there. Risk.

'Cause even though it can be the scariest, craziest thing you could do - sometimes the results are freaking awesome.

How are you going to take a risk this week?

☆ Quirky Animals [Life Book 2014]

Week 15 - Quirky Animals with Tam

Do you remember last year when I shared the series of Quirky Birds that I had done as part of the Life Book 2013 classes?

Well that was such a popular lesson, with quirky birds are popping up all over the internet, that this year, instead of birds, we did a series of quirky animals.

I love drawing stylised animals. Besides my big eyed girls, it is one of my favourite things to draw, (check out my alternate alphabet). And I have been drawing stylised animals since I was in high school. (Mainly because I couldn't draw then realistically!)

In particular, my lion, (Lionel) has graced pencil cases, diary pages, folders, sketch pads, paintings + friends arms.

If you have know me since I was a pimply faced teen, you will probably remember Lionel!

So it was hugely fun to choose animals, which mean a lot to me spiritually, emotionally, physically. Some who are new to me + some who are old friends

So meet my quirky animal team:

  • The Monkey - because I need to remember to play more, have fun, life is not always serious.
  • The Zebra - because although we may all look similar, we are all different, unique + gorgeous creatures
  • The Koala - Because I really need to look after myself more + get more sleep. Candle burning both ends here guys!
  • The Deer - Because I am a sensitive + I need to be reminded that my intuition is almost always  right. Trust in it.
  • The Elephant - Because I need to just barge through the road blocks + obstacles that I put in place to obtaining my dreams.
  • And Lionel, my lion -  a reminder to be constantly brave + grab my courage + let go. Also, he is the freaking king + no one talks shit to him, so a reminder not to take any shit - no matter how well intentioned.

So there you have it, my animal totem.

Do you have an affinity to a particular animal? I would love to know which animal speaks to you + why that animal is so special.

Oh, by the way - thank you every one who left a comment on Fridays Kimmi Doll post, with your fabulous suggestions + ideas for marketing them in the future x

☆ The Kimmi Doll Explosion [Friday Art]

Week 18 - April 2014

Last week, I realised that I couldn't do it all.

With Easter, and family visiting, organising, school holidays + preparing for a market stall, I realised that there was no way I was going to get a Friday Art post up.

But that didn't mean that there wasn't any art done last week....

Not at all - last week, there was lots of burning the candle at both ends, late nights + early mornings + lots + lots of Kimmi Dolls being painted.

Aren't they sweet.

I am selling them at the next market stall I have at the end of the month. And I was hoping you could help me.

You see, I remember watching one of those home shows, one of the ones that help you sell your home + the host of the show said something that has stuck with me forever

"You need to show people how to use a space."

What he meant was that if you have an empty room, you need to show people that it could be a bedroom, a study or a guest room. The host believed that houses with furniture, sold so much quicker than empty ones.

And so this is where I would love your opinion.

These have a hole + will have chain or ribbon through them.

I am thinking of having a stand with a hook or two, maybe a door handle to show people how they might use these, but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas?

I would love to know how you would use these Kimmi Dolls. Please, please share with me below.
