☆ Sometimes Raising Girls is Like Managing a Roller Derby Team [Friday Art]

Sometimes raising three girls is like managing a Roller Derby Team.

The jostling + pushing to be first to the treat.

The camaraderie + love when one of the team is down.

The cheering + jeering of each other.

Their instinctive need to rush the front door as a unit, (with backpacks + lunch boxes at the ready!_ rather than one at a time like orderly people! Really!?!

I started this weeks painting with these thoughts in mind, and in the end, although they are not fierce roller derby chicks (+ how awesome are they!), there is a sense of camaraderie + belonging in the painting that I have enjoyed.

My Bean keeps on asking for roller skates, but I am not sure if I am ready for the skinned knees + face plants that come with that activity.

The Sisters
Available to purchase here.
But I know that she would love it, as I did + that parenting is about letting your kids go + explore + being there to pick up the pieces.

So I would love to know - Should santa bring Bean a pair of skates this year? Do I also invest in a huge wad of bubble wrap? Or get over myself (+ yes you can totally tell me that!).

Have a great weekend - we are off for a family vacay weekend which, now that I am packed (Three children to pack? so much easier when it was just me!) I am totally excited for!

  2. Love your girls...oh my goodness you are so talented as a clothes designer...love what your characters wear!! They are just so amazing!! Can you take your girls to a roller rink somewhere? I bought my daughter roller blades and shin pads and arm pads and she wore a helmet...but by 4 she had them...and I kept buying them when she needed a new size. I took her rollerskating for the first time at 3. I loved roller skating when I was young so I am the wrong person to ask. She even had the fisher price ones that go on your shoes when she was younger. All the best.... I would get them if she wants them....but take her skating if you can! Kids pick it up so fast!

  5. I love this piece - they are so cool and the sense of sisterhood is just oozing out of the illustration! I loved my roller boots when I was young so yes, I think it's time to get Bean the roller boots but just invest in every type of pad for every bit of body so if she falls there won't be any skin visible to skin!!

  7. Yeah I think Bean deserves a pair of skates from Santa this year. She might skin her knees a little while she is still learning to skate but then she will be fine. You can also take her to the rollerrink. Have a wonderful weekend. Happy PPF!!

  10. these girls remind me so of my two BFFs since 2nd grade - over 40yrs now-and how I cherish them. Only wished we looked like the beauties you've painted here :):) we only had 1 son so I know nothing about raising girls. But I say get the skates-and with it include knee and elbow pads!
PS- I responded to your email from last week but somehow don't think it went thru?

  14. Love these beautiful girls...camaraderie indeed! I grew up in a house of girls. (There were four of us.) I'm sure my parents found it to be quite a challenge sometimes! Hope you have loads of fun on your trip, Kirstin. Oh, and I vote YES to the roller skates! xo, janice

  16. What a super painting - those girls look like BFF's to me. As far as the skates go - don't know how old your Bean is but you do have let them fall and then help them up - scary I know.
